A wild game supper will be held at 6:00 pm on Thursday, January 24, 2008, at the Andrews Community Building, sponsored by First Assembly Sportsmen.
The event, which consists of a full meal (bear, deer, rabbit, hog, trout, and more) with drink and dessert, is for guys only, and boys should be accompanied by an adult.

The Cherokee County Health Department will hold a four-week program on why it is necessary to eat well and how to eat well even when one is suffering from a chronic illness or other medical condition.
The workshop will meet at the Penland Senior Center on Alpine Street in Murphy, NC, from 10:30 am until 11:30 am beginning on Tuesday, January 22, 2008, and continuing on January 29, February 5, and February 12.
Everyone is invited. There is no cost.

Free Financial Fitness Workshop - Murphy, NC 28906 - January 22, 2008

The Cherokee County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and the Office of Economic Opportunity of Catholic Social Services are sponsoring a free financial fitness workshop on Tuesday, January 22, 2008.
The workshop will be held from 11:00 am until 7:00 pm at the Hiwassee Valley Pool and Wellness Center in Murphy, NC.
The first 25 people to register for the workshop will receive a free dinner, too.
The event will include topics on budgeting, holiday debt, and tips for the upcoming tax season.
Professionals from the community will present information and strategies for financial management. A credit counselor also will be available to answer questions.
This is a good opportunity for all who have concerns about their financial situation or who would like to get the new year started on a positive track with planning and budgeting.

North Carolina Cooperative Extension Master Gardner training - Brasstown, NC 28902

The Cherokee County Center and the Clay County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service will be offering Extension Master Gardner training starting on Monday, February 11, 2008 and continuing on Mondays and Wednesdays through Monday, March 31, 2008.
The training will be held at the Brasstown Community Center starting at 9:00 am each session and lasting until 1:00 pm. A tuition fee of $75 will be collected on February 11, 2008, to cover expenses.
Becoming an Extension Master Gardner has certain responsibilities and an obligation to donate a certain amount of community service. Interest has been high and seating is limited.

Mountain Little League will hold baseball signups for coaches pitch (ages 7-8), minor league (ages 9-10), and major league (ages 11-12).
You can sign up at the following sites:
- Ranger - from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Monday, January 28, 2008; Tuesday, January 29; and Thursday, January 31. Contact Eddie Allen.
- Martins Creek - from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday, January 18, 2008, and Thursday, January 24.
- Murphy - from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday, January 25, 2008; from 10:00 am until noon on Saturday, January 26, 2008; from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday, February 1; and from 10:00 am until noon on Saturday, February 2.
- Murphy girls softball will hold signups at the same times.
- Peachtree - from 10:00 am until noon on Saturday, January 26, 2008; from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday, January 31; and from 10:00 am until noon on Saturday, February 2, 2008.
There are no T-ball signups set, yet.
The cost is $40.00 for the first child and $25.00 for the second child in any family.
Organizers said parents need to bring a copy of the child's birth certificate and ID for themselves to the signups.

The Hiwassee Valley Pool and Wellness Center will be offering a Water Arthritis Aquatic Class from 10:00 am until 11:00 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The cost is $2.00 per class. The programs is a medically-approved, warm-water class program, with water temperatures at 84 degrees.
The program is designed specifically for people with arthritis to ease pain, lessen stiffness, build cardiovascular endurance, tone muscles, and improve joint flexibility.

Fourth Annual Robert Burns Dinner - Murphy, NC 28906 - January 25, 2008

Appalachian Highland Games Inc. will host the fourth annual Robert Burns Dinner at 6:30 pm on Friday, January 25, 2008 at the Ballroom, 51 Hiwassee Street, in downtown Murphy, NC.
The evening will feature fine dining with a selection of entrees and other food provided by Doyle's Cedar Hill Restaurant.
There also will be music and entertainment, including the traditional "Address to the Haggis."
Everyone is invited to attend, whether or not they have Scottish ancestry.

In celebration of the life and works of Robert Burns, Scotland's most famous poet (born January 25,1759 and died July 21, 1796), dinners have been held annually on or about his birthday for about 200 years.
Burns wrote more than 250 poems, more than 350 songs, and hundreds of letters, but is probably best known for "Auld Lang Syne" which is sung annually at New Years.
He is the most popular poet on the face of the planet, and thousands of Burns dinners are held around the world each year, organizers said.

Sing Behind the Plow Nominated for an Emmy Award - Brasstown, NC 28906

Jan Davidson has been nominated for an Emmy Award as co-producer and writer of the television documentary Sing Behind the Plow: John C. Campbell Folk School, according to the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
The one-hour story of the John C. Campbell Folk School will compete against four others in the category of "Best Historical Documentary in the Mid-South Region." It will also compete in the category "Best Music in a Historical Documentary."
Sing Behind the Plow, a project of the John C. Campbell Folk School and University of North Carolina Public Television premiered in 2007 on UNC-TV and was selected by American Public Television to be offered nationwide. Forty-nine stations plan on broadcasting in the coming months. Brenda Hughes and Scott Davis of UNC-TV share the nomination with Jan Davidson as executive producers of the documentary.
Members of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences vote for their choices, and the winners will be announced at the regional Emmy Awards Ceremony in Nashville's Schermerhorn Symphony Center on January 26, 2008.

Released at the end of December 2007, Nighthoots and Morningsongs is now available for purchase.
With generous support from the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, Folklorist David Brose has produced this CD for the Folk School featuring local and regional talent of all ages and music of all varieties, including old-time, classical, original, jazz, standard and spiritual.
Many artists on the CD are regular performers at the Folk School for Morningsong, Friday night concerts, or have been Monday night guests of "David Brose & Friends." If you've attended the Folk School, chances are that you've heard at least one of these musicians before!

Jan Davidson Receives North Carolina's Top Honor - Brasstown, NC 28902

John C. Campbell Folk School Director Jan Davidson received the 2007 North Carolina Award for Fine Arts in November 2007.
The North Carolina Award is the highest civilian honor the state can bestow. Jan Davidson has been the director of the Folk School since 1992 and the school has gone through a period of revitalization largely because of his leadership, vision and hard work.
"These awards are our most prestigious civilian honor and are given to those North Carolinians whose contributions to the state are enduring and truly significant," said North Carolina Governor Mike Easley. "We are fortunate to live in a state with so many outstanding individuals who, through their leadership, their talents and their time, have helped make North Carolina a better place to live."

Johnny Prather, owner/broker of Western Carolina Real Estate Co., Inc. in Murphy, NC, recently presented a check for $1,000 to the US Marine Corps Reserves Toys For Tots foundation.
Marjorie Thaggard, local Toys for Tots coordinator, and Ron Eichholz, who will be taking over for Thaggard this year, accepted the check.
The money was used to buy Christmas presents for Cherokee County children.

Murphy Medical Center has hired Kathi Osborne as the director of the Murphy Medical Center Foundation.
She will be responsible for raising funds for the non-profit health-care facility.
"Murphy Medical Center is fortunate to hire someone with Kathi's talent and we all look forward to her leadership and to her taking the foundation to a higher level," said Mike Stevenson, Murphy Medical Center's chief executive officer.

The Cherokee County NC Chamber of Commerce will hold its 38th annual Dinner Meeting and third Awards Night on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at The Millrace Farm Banquet Hall off Hendrix Road in Murphy, NC.
Lee Ebert, president and CEO of the North Carolina State Chamber of Commerce, will be the keynote speaker.
Social hour is from 5:00 PM through 6:00 PM, with dinner following at 6:00. Music will be provided by John C. Campbell Folk School players.
