Wagon Train tradition continues

The 51st Annual Wagon Train is making its trek once again through the backwoods of Andrews. This long-established tradition is a chance for families to enjoy the outdoors and relive a piece of local history.

The active National Guard soldier and his neighbors will soon be moving into Wesley Meadows, a mutual selfhelp housing program organized by the Hinton Rural Life Center.

It's so new, they don't even call it a jail. They call it a detention center. Whatever the case, it's a place where bad guys and bad girls are held when the get into deep kimchi. It's a place where caught violators of the law are brought and locked up.

Owens sentenced to prison

Carl Steve Owens, age 61, a Cherokee County man, was sentenced in the Cherokee County Superior Court Thursday June 26, 2008 to a total active prison sentence of a minimum of 228 months and a maximum of 283 months (19 years to 23 years 7 months) to be served in the North Carolina Department of Corrections.

Lemonade stand helps library

Jourdan and Morgan Brickey had one of the most photogenic fundraisers in Cherokee County recently. With the help of their mother, Breia Brickey, a volunteer at the Murphy Library, they became part of Crayons Pink Lemonade Brigade and raised money for the library with a lemonade stand.

Story Time will explore space

Assistant librarian Steven Abernethy is looking into the sky for Thursday's Family Story Time at the Murphy Library. The theme is space and Abernethy will read stories about the planets and space exploration from new books in the children's section. Story Time will start at 6:15 p.m. and young readers and their parents are welcome to this popular event.

Bulldog Scholarship recipient announced

Joanna Cornerstone Ministries, Inc. and the 2008 Bulldog Scholarship Selection Committee are proud to announce Matthew Hendrix as recipient of the 2008 Bulldog Scholarship. In January of 2004, Murphy High School Alumni Erik and Paige Brinke planted the "seed" money to establish the Bulldog Scholarship.

IOI elects new officers and board members

At the June 17 Industrial Opportunities, Inc. (IOI) board of directors meeting, the IOI board elected Randy Wiggins as Board Chairman and Lee Ferguson as Vice Chairman. Elected to serve an additional three-year term were: Glenn Tatum and Randy Wiggins of Cherokee County.

Carolyn Buckingham, teacher at Murphy Adventist Christian School, is retiring after 44 years in the classroom. During her teaching career she has taught all grades from kindergarten through 12th grade, spending 13 years in the public school system and 31 years in private schools. Six of those years were dedicated to Murphy Adventist Christian School.

Ada Farmer Hall, age 99 of Murphy, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2008 at the Murphy Medical Center Nursing Home. She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County. Ada was a homemaker, enjoyed quilting, gardening sewing and was of the Church of God faith. She was the daughter of the late John Ulyssus and Molly Bell Radford Farmer.

Robert Hugh Rayburn, 69, of Andrews died Monday, June 23, 2008. He was a native and lifelong resident of Andrews and the son of the late Mary Willie Mashburn Gentry and S.R. Rayburn. He had a bachelors degree in education from Western Carolina University.

Crystal Carringer Davis, 30, of Murphy died Saturday, June 28, 2008. She was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County. She was a graduate of Western Carolina University with a bachelor's degree in computer science. She had worked for several years with the Cherokee County School system. Crystal was a member of the Hanging Dog Baptist Church.

Marie Laney Davis, age 67, of Marble, died Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at the Valleyview Care Center in Andrews. She was a native and lifelong residence of Cherokee County. Marie was a homemaker, and loved her family. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Murphy. She was the daughter of Neily McTaggert Laney of Murphy, and the late Gid Laney.
Henry Pearce

Henry E Pearce, age 78 of Murphy, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at his home. He was born Friday, October 18, 1929 in Lee County, Fla., to the late Walter Pearce and the late Mellie Stephenson Pearce. Henry was a Kiwanis member, Eagle Scout, a real estate broker and a pilot. He enjoyed the opportunity to show property from the air.
Tri-County college holds IOI awards ceremony

Tri-County Community College (TCCC) held its annual awards ceremony at Industrial Opportunities, Inc. (IOI) on Thursday, May 22. The ceremony recognized those students who participated in compensatory education courses offered by TCCC at the plant. Compensatory education is an educational opportunity for intellectually challenged adults.

Buster is a 2 year old male Boxer. He is a perfect specimen of the male boxer and has the perfect personality to go with his good looks. He is brindle in coloring and is up to date on his shots and is neutered. As part of his adoption he will also be micro chipped to make the complete perfect package. Buster is good with everyone, dogs, cats and children.

Mary and Bob Cox will be featured in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 4 at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown. The concert will be held in the Festival Barn, but those attending are urged to park near Keith House or the Dining Hall and walk to the Festival Barn where there will be only a limited number of handicapped parking spaces available.
